Melbourne & Victoria

Melbourne is my personal favourite city in Australia and where I spent around 6 months, with plenty off things to do in the city without feeling too busy. I have also also include some of the other areas of Victoria I visited which are all driveable from Melbourne.

Recommend time to do visa Melbourne is 3/4 if you plan on doing the Great Ocean Road and Grampians add 4 days

This in for Melbourne and gives tips of trips to do outside of Melbourne within Victoria.

Wanting to visit the East Coast too, check out the page

Expected spending £400 per week

Melbourne | Great Ocean Road | Grampians | Yarra Ranges

Entry: Apply for a 3 month visa through the Australian visa website free (usually comes within 24 hours) or pay around £20 to get your visa quickly through a 3rd party

Accommodation: Starting from £20 a night, check out the accommodation page for suggestions

Getting round: Within Melbourne you can get round on trams they're cheap you just need to get a mykey card, for the great ocean road and the yarra ranges you will need a car, if you made a couple of friends they are fairly cheap to rent.

Food: All your standard food, to stick to a budget cook for yourself as much as possible.

TOP TIP: If you want to drink on a budget get on the goon but be care that stuff is rough.

Melbourne

Melbourne is my favourite city in the world and an amazing place to visit. It has the best nightlife compared to the other cities in Australia and a friendly atmosphere. While in Melbourne you can visit; the shrine of remembrance, the Eureka Tower, Luna Park, see the Penguins in St Kilda, the colour huts at Brighton beach and more. I would recommend seeing the city to anyone who has time and if you get the chance on a working holiday definitely try living here, especially in the summer months. If you want some cheap beers head to Asian beer cafe. In the evening you can also visit the queen victoria markets which are really interesting and I would highly recommend.

Top things: St Kilda Beach/Pier | Casino | Queen Victoria Markets | Eureka Tower | Brighton Beach | Luna Park

Great Ocean Road

I road tripped from Melbourne to Perth and the first stretch of that trip is along the Great Ocean Road, for anyone with a few extra days in Melbourne this is definitely something to put on your to do list. Everyone goes at their own pace so just find a few mates rent a car for a couple of days and set off. You will find places to stay along the way or you can always just pull off down and camp in a lay-by, but you didn't hear that from me.

Top spots: Lorne | 12 Apostles

The Grampians

This is only a short distance from the Great Ocean Road and again something I 100% recommend if you have enough time and you enjoy hiking. With a friendly tourist information, they will point you in the right direction of a free campsite or you a find one of the other paying sites located.

Top spot: Mckenzie Falls

Yarra Valley

Again another great place to go hiking for a long day trip from Melbourne or a couple of days. The Yarra Valley has plenty of walking tracks so pick one that suits you and go for it. Be careful when driving from Melbourne as you will most likely drive through a e-toll tunnel and if you do you will need to pay for e-toll online!!!

Thanks for checking out my thoughts on Melbourne and Victoria. If you want to know more about Melbourne or what to do here I lived in Melbourne for 6 months and I am more than happy to share more of my experiences with you.
